Dear Katie,

Your classy description of The Torches “Sounding more like they hail from a Louisiana bayou than the District, The Torches sound like Americana-infused Gogol Bordello with a heavy dose of Tom Waits fire and brimstone. Dark songs feature shredding banjo, harmonica and looping clarinet melodies…” has given us the good will to forgive your referring to our oboe as a “clarinet.” A redaction and edit would be appreciated, though. All in all, though, a well-written review! Kudos to those who contextualize art for the rest of us.

To Record "To the Grave"

The Torches piled into the studio this past Wednesday to record a song.

We hooked up pedals.

We checked drums.

We even set up microphones.

The song is, at the moment, known as “To The Grave” and this will be the “Luce Foundation” version of the song, as it was recorded specifically for the Luce Foundation and their collection, housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Secondly, we will simply tantalize you with the vague concept of a release of our first full-length album this year. Ten songs recorded with Hays Holladay and Nick Anderson and, at times, on our own. More details as they come.

In the meantime, we will be releasing one (1) song from this album along side of two songs from the same session that will likely not end up on the full-length album. These are sometimes referred to as a “single” and its “b-side(s).” The “single” will be “Cup of Misery” and you can hear it live at any of the following upcoming shows:

Sunday - Feb 12 - Luce Unplugged with the Torches @ 1:30pm
Smithsonian Luce Foundation Center - 8th and F Streets, N.W. - Washington, DC
FREE.

This is a free, mostly all acoustic show by the Torches at the art gallery. Some of us might be perched upon stools. And it’s in the middle of the darn afternoon, so bring the kids.
